Fat vs CHO vs PRO

The Macronutrient, Fat tends to get a bad rap.

One of the main reasons for this is because 1g Fat =9 calories whereas 1g of Carbohydrate (CHO) = 4 calories and 1 g of Protein (PRO) = 4 calories, respectively.

As you can se, energetically, fat packs a greater punch. So in the case of overeating, consuming fat tends to be looked down on. This is because consuming same-sized/portioned high fat foods will have more calories than that of CHO or PRO foods. Another way of looking at it is that calorically, CHO and PRO foods can go further-meaning one could arguably eat larger portions of CHO or PRO than Fat because you get more food for less calorie.

This is kind of an ancient way of thinking. Fortunately, the field of nutrition’s progressed to talk about quality of calories and not just quality.

If you’re a Fit Pro, chances are you know that not all calories are equal. For example, transfats don’t add nutritional value to foods whereas unsaturated fats do.

Another reason Fat gets a bad rap is because the human body can’t store PRO. Any excess consumption of PRO is converted and stored as fat.

The body can store CHO in the form of glycogen, stored in the liver and in adipose tissue.

Consuming excess fat gets stored in various areas of the body, depending on the type that’s stored. Some will be stored in the liver and the gallbladder. However, the main storage area for it is in fat cells called adipocytes. When too much of it is consumed, adipocytes swell up and result in weight gain.

Not only that, but since the human body can’t store Pro, any excess protein consumed by the body is converted and stored as fat.

The body can store CHO in the form of glycogen, but it is stored in the liver AND adipose tissue.

Needless to say, adipose tissue is not very revered. But it is

Though some cholesterol components are stored in the liver and gallbladder, the main storage area for excess lipoproteins is in fat cells called adipocytes. When you have too much cholesterol, these cells swell up and you gain weight.
